Bacterial Wilt of Solanaceous Vegetables

Bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most widespread diseases of solanaceous vegetables, viz., tomato, eggplant, chili, and potato in India and the world. The disease is serious and soil-borne in nature and damage of crop is widespread and loss is significant. Several researches on understanding the nature of pathogens and ways and means of mitigation of the loss have been done in India and abroad but these are not available at one place and pose problems to seekers of information. In this book the information scattered in various forms of literature (1896-2014) is collected and systematically compiled, crop-wise, in seven chapters. The importance of the above solanaceous vegetables and their nutritive value, pathogen and bacterial wilt have been discussed in the first chapter. The symptomatology of diseases with photographs, their etiology, distribution of race biovars and their diagnosis, morphological, biochemical physiological characteristics of pathogen, pathogenecity, serodiagnosis, molecular diagnosis and protocol for detection of R. solancearumin soil and plant have been discussed in the second chapter. The maintenance and preservation of culture have been included in the third chapter. Genomics and mechanism of pathogenesis have been discussed in the fourth chapter. Research work done on losses and epidemiology have been compiled in the fifth chapter in which detailed information on survival and host range has also been included. In the sixth chapter management of diseases has been discussed under sub-sections, viz, integrated disease management, cultural management, crop rotation, soil amendment, biological control, host resistant, induced systemic resistance and chemical control methods. Conclusion and future research have been discussed in chapter seven. This compilation will be useful for persons engaged in research, teaching and extension. The book will be useful for the postgraduate and Ph.D students, researchers, extension workers as well as educated farmers to help enhance knowledge about bacterial wilt of solanaceous crops and their scientific way of management to reduce crop losses.
