Ira A Levine

Dr. Ira Levine, obtained his M. Sc. from the School of Marine Science, University of South Florida and Ph.D. from the Botany Department, University of Hawaii. Presently, a tenured Associate Professor of Natural and Applied Sciences at the University of Southern Maine and a 2009-2010 U.S. State Department Fulbright Fellow. Previously, a 2007/2008 visiting professor of biology at Duke University. Dr. Levine combines 23 years of applied and basic research in the design, construction, assembly and management of algal farms. His research areas include physiological ecology and aquaculture engineering of algal cultivation. Dr. Levine�s farming experience includes open-ocean and pond cultivation in Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, and USA (Hawaii, Florida, and Maine). He was the founder and CEO of PhycoGen, an algal biotechnology and marine natural products company in the 90�s. Previous efforts include: curator of the Maine Aquarium and director of the Maine Marine Mammal Rescue Team, Vice Chair of the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, former President of the Maine Aquaculture Association.
